Conditions We Treat

Specialised surgical care for the gallbladder, hernia, liver and pancreas — with every diagnosis and treatment plan clearly explained.

Prof. Mittal treats a focused range of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary conditions using minimally invasive (keyhole and robotic) techniques. Below is an overview of each condition; select a condition to read a detailed guide, or request a consultation to discuss your situation.

General

Hernia

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a weakness in the surrounding muscle or tissue wall. Hernias are common and, while not always dangerous, usually require repair to prevent complications.

Prof. Mittal repairs hernias using robotic and laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques, reinforcing the muscle wall with mesh through small incisions — which can mean less pain and a quicker return to normal activity. Most patients go home the same day.

  • Common types: inguinal, umbilical, incisional, femoral
  • Approach: robotic / keyhole repair with mesh
  • Stay: usually same-day
General

Gallbladder & Gallstones

Gallstones are common and can cause pain, inflammation or infection. When gallstones become symptomatic, removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) is the most effective treatment.

Prof. Mittal performs cholecystectomy as a laparoscopic (keyhole) procedure, usually as a day or short-stay case, with small incisions and a relatively quick recovery.

  • Symptoms: upper abdominal or right-sided pain, often after meals
  • Treatment: laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Stay: usually day-case or overnight
Complex

Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer requires specialised, multidisciplinary care. As a founding member of the Australian Pancreatic Centre based at Royal North Shore Hospital, Prof. Mittal provides advanced surgical management for pancreatic cancer.

This includes major procedures such as the Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy), performed as part of a coordinated team involving oncology, radiology and specialist nursing.

  • Care model: multidisciplinary, Australian Pancreatic Centre
  • Surgery: including the Whipple procedure
  • Focus: precision, recovery and supported follow-up
Complex

Pancreatic Cysts

Pancreatic cysts range from benign to pre-cancerous, so accurate diagnosis and ongoing surveillance are essential. Not all cysts need surgery — many are monitored carefully over time.

Prof. Mittal provides diagnosis, surveillance and, where needed, surgical treatment of pancreatic cysts, with a clear plan tailored to the type of cyst and your individual circumstances.

  • Goal: accurate diagnosis and risk assessment
  • Options: surveillance or surgery, depending on the cyst
  • Approach: individualised, clearly explained
